Karen Twitchell, principal writer, editor
and project manager for KLT Communications,
has 20 years of experience in the magazine industry and
government. After more than 11 years as a staff editor
for two national magazines, including Canadian Geographic,
Karen put her talents to work for a variety of government
clients including the National Research Council, Environment
Canada, the International Development Research Centre,
Health Canada, the International Model Forest Network
Secretariat, Citizenship and Immigration, and Human Resources
Development Canada. She has a Bachelor of Journalism from
Carleton University.
For larger projects, KLT Communications
collaborates with other seasoned writers and designers
to meet the needs of clients…on target…on
time.
Karen has obtained an Enhanced Reliability
security clearance as a prerequisite to working for some
clients.
Experience
Karen’s experience includes the development, research,
writing and editing of a wide range of communication products
including press releases, backgrounders, success stories,
magazine features and news articles, book reviews, book
content, annual reports, web documents, Q&As, newsletters,
and manuals. She has also written internal communications
material for senior government officials.
Over the years, Karen has written about a wide variety
of issues including: the science of climate change, environmental
health issues, water quality, toxic contaminants, communicable
diseases, biodiversity, and international development
research. She was a contributing writer to the book Follow
the Leaders: Celebrating Canada’s Biotechnology

As a former staff editor for two national magazines, Karen
also has experience in all aspects of the editorial process
from writing and editing to developing story ideas, fact
checking, writing display copy, consulting with authors,
interviewing, collaborating with designers, and proofreading
layouts and blues.
